Last year I moved to high school, and from only having eighteen people in my year to nearly one hundred, it was a change I wasn’t prepared for. Many things were yet to come socially that I had no idea about.
Later on that year I started texting a guy I met over the summer holidays. He seemed really nice. The guy ended up asking me for a photo. I didn’t know what he was talking about, my face or what … I was incredibly confused. So I asked him, what of? He replied by saying something like ‘Take your clothes off,’ but I can’t really remember. I didn’t end up sending him one that night but he didn’t let me forget that I said no, he kept on asking me and eventually I did send him one. I think I wanted to feel special.
I didn’t realise till later he was not just asking me, he was asking many other girls and I was just another victim.
Weeks later many of his friends started texting me. Obviously finding out what I had done, they wanted a photo too. I liked this one guy that started to text me, I thought he was really cute. He asked me for a photo many times too and promised to send one back, not that I wanted one! He eventually got the better of me and I sent him one too. He didn’t end up sending me one, as his camera didn’t work …
I learnt the hard way how to not get caught up in sexting. I regret this so much now and it was just that split second that caught me out to press the send button.
No-one should be treated like I was. I guess it was just the thing all the boys were doing at the time and me and a few of my friends got caught up in it. I think it would have helped me to be aware of what all the sexting stuff was before I entered high school or was around boys with testosterone!
I later found out that my mum had been reading books on teenage girls and even been to my doctor to see why I was acting so rudely. At the time it seemed as though she was always right near me wanting to know everything about what was happening. Yet when I look back she was doing it to help me. One of the girls who was in the boys’ grade who I was very close to convinced me to pull away from these boys before they hurt me even more and thanks to her I didn’t get more involved.
I think the best way parents can deal with problems like this is to talk to someone your daughter trusts and who is older than them, like someone in the year above them at school. I found that I trusted her because she was older and knew the boys, and I was close to her because she was in my house at school and also swam.
